The Krylov Institute Library

Publication

The Research Library of the Krylov Institute has a unique, largest in the national shipbuilding industry collection of Russian and international publications on naval architecture and related disciplines. It is the only library in this industry that till recently used to subscribe to over 50 foreign periodicals.

True decorations of the stock are rare 18th~early 20th-century editions of autographed by prominent naval architects that have presented them to the library.

The Krylov Institute Research Library has become the first one in the national shipbuilding industry to introduce a computer catalogue meeting all modern requirements. Actually, that is not just a list of the available books but also an electronic card index of articles from all periodicals received by the Institute. The comprehensive representation of the library stock in the computer catalogue enables to make search using any component or any combination of components of the bibliographic reference record, including the UDK codes. The system uses the USMARC international communication format, which makes it potentially possible to exchange data with other libraries of any level, including via the Internet.

The Research Library offers various reference and library services (including with the computer catalogue): current and retrospective reference searching, compilation of topic-wise briefs and indices, awareness news based on foreign magazine tables of content, new-arrivals exhibitions and fast-service article copying.

Based on the computer database of books and articles, the Research Library releases Bibliographic Index of New Acquisitions (monthly) and New Books Acquired in the Year of .... (annually).

Besides, the Research Library performs deposition of manuscripts relevant for the shipbuilding industry. The deposited articles are regarded as publications and are taken into account when considering the submitted theses. Data about the manuscripts deposited at the Institute are regularly forwarded to the All-union Institute of Inter-industry Information (VIMI) to be published in their collections of abstracts. Ourselves, we include these data in our Shipbuilding & Related Topics annual publication list. Request for manuscript copies are always met promptly.

Charges for services to outside customers are cleared through bank settlements based on letters of guarantee from their employers.
