Test Rigs for Research on Ship Magnetic Silencing & Degaussing

1. Non-magnetic Test Shed

Experimental facilities of the Krylov Institute for work associated with magnetic signature control include two unique non-magnetic test sheds.

Principal characteristics of the test sheds:
  • Terrestrial field cancellation within the measurement zone
  • Latitude simulation up to ±60mT for the vertical component and up to 40mT for the horizontal component
  • Magnetic field non-uniformity of simulation loops in the working media is within ±3%
  • Magnetic model dimensions within 6m x 1m x 1m, magneto-mechanical model dimensions within 4.5m x 0.5m x 0.5m
  • Maximum pressure in the non-magnetic pressure tank: 40atm
  • Maximum bending force sufficient to generate mechanical stresses in the model hull of half the yield stress
  • External field strength for electromagnetic silencing: up to 10mT at frequencies of up to 1Hz and 4mT at 50Hz

2. The laboratory instrumental suite

The laboratory instrumental suite for magnetic signature measurements for ship and marine equipment model tests and laboratory experimental research on marine magnetism

    includes:
  • Primary instrumental transducers positioned with the help of a special traversing system
  • Computer-aided system for data procession and visualisation
  • Software

    and enables to:
  • Measure equipment magnetic moments
  • Find parameters of magnetic models simulating the investigated designs

3. The mobile instrumental suite

The mobile instrumental suite for magnetic signature measurements for naval ships and merchant vessels at stop and underway:

  • with a long-base instrumental array (instrumental girder) for ships of up to 2000t displacement
  • with instrumental seabed stations for ships of over 2000t displacement

    includes:
  • System of primary instrumental transducers
  • Integrated system for referring the measured data to the monitored ship co-ordinate grid
  • Computer-aided system for data procession and visualisation

    and enables to:
  • Measure ship magnetic signatures at specified depths

This instrumental suite is designated for setting up mobile research and test stations in unprepared waters.
