Signature Ñontrol & Ocean Physical Field Division

 A.M.Vishnevsky

Head of Division
D.Sc. (Tech.), Professor
A.M.Vishnevskiy

One of the most advanced areas of the Institute’s activities is the development and implementation of stealth technologies intended for minimizing the probability of ships being detected and hit by hostile weapons guided by ship signatures.

In 1960 the Krylov Institute set up a special-purpose division to focus on ship protection and stealth. The division efforts over this period of time led to establishment of the new research field - ship electrodynamics. Unique experimental facilities have been set up and a wide range of developments implemented on ships of various types.

Today the division is headed by Doctor of Technical Sciences & Professor A.M. Vishnevsky. The division staff working on the issues of signature management includes 8 doctors and 28 candidates of technical sciences.

Based on the integrated studies of magnetic, electric, extremely low-frequency electromagnetic, radar, infra-red, laser and hydrophysical signatures the division has developed and continuously elaborated the methods and procedures for physical modeling and numerical analysis, prediction and estimation as well as for the design of tools intended for signature measurement, reduction and management. The Division's activity is spread to connected domains: electromagnetic compatibility, scientific & methodological guidance for design and development of equipment for measuring parameters of ship physical fields, protection of personnel from harmful effects of physical fields, ecological monitoring and engineering surveys.

Innovative Research & Development

  • Physical and mathematical models of ship signatures: static magnetic, static electric, alternating electromagnetic in various frequency bands and hydrophysical signatures;
  • Analytical and numerical methods, procedures and software for calculating ship signatures;
  • Methods and hardware for control of ship signature spatial and time-domain characteristics;
  • Methods of estimations to elaborate design rules for selecting, validating and optimizing the signature control tools and measures;
  • Methods, procedures and tools for laboratory and full-scale ship signature measurements.

Implementation of Research & Development

Naval Shipbuilding Industry

– Ship design:

  • elaboration of contract design specifications;
  • scale-model studies;
  • prediction of ship signature levels;
  • elaboration of ship outline;
  • development of design rules for control of ship signatures.

– Ship construction:

  • quality assurance of components of ship signature control systems;
  • project supervision to monitor measures aimed at meeting specified ship signature levels;
  • check on the efficiency of the ship signature control measures.

– Sea trials:

  • setting up of instrumentation systems;
  • monitoring of the class-lead ship signatures;
  • detection of sources giving rise to excessive signature levels;
  • development of extra signature reduction measures;
  • meeting of customer's acceptance criteria for ship signatures;
  • training of ship crew on proper operation of ship signature control systems.

Commercial Shipbuilding and Other Industries

  • elaboration and implementation of recommendations, practical measures for monitoring the levels of physical fields radiated by equipment, instrumentation and facilities indoor and in open environment;
  • elaboration and implementation of recommendations for protection of personnel, equipment and environment from harmful physical fields in ships, drilling rigs and other marine structures, on land transport, industrial facilities, offices and residential buildings.
