The Division works on various aspects of the mechanical strength of marine hull structures and is the leading centre of this science in Russia.

The Division emerged as a separate administrative body by 1960's though A.N.Krylov has already in 1900 performed vibration tests of the Gromoboy cruiser whereas I.G.Boubnov on his appointment to the post of the Model Basin Superintendent in 1908 identified 'Strength' as a special vector of work. Significant contributions to the establishment and the development of the Division came from such prominent scientists as Professor I.G.Boubnov, Academicians Y.A.Shimansky and V.V.Novozhilov, and Professors V.S.Chouvikovsky and G.S.Chouvikovsky.

Today, the Division has 9 Doctors and 44 Masters of Science, including experts on the structural strength of naval and commercial surface ships Prof. Dr.Tech.Sc. G.V.Boitsov, Prof.Dr.Tech.Sc. E.J.Voronenok, Dr.Tech.Sc. E.M.Appolonov, Ms.Tech.Sc. G.V.Kryzhevich and Ms.Tech.Sc. V.М.Shaposhnikov; an expert on the strength of offshore structures Dr.Tech.Sc. O.E.Litonov; experts on the strength of deepwater vehicles Prof.Dr.Tech.Sc. A.I.Koudrin, Dr.Tech.Sc. V.M.Riabov, Ms.Tech.Sc. V.P.Ibnojaminov, Ms.Tech.Sc. V.V.Osipenko; experts on the dynamic strength and vibrations of structures Dr.Tech.Sc. N.S.Karateev and Dr.Tech.Sc. E.N.Schiukina; and an expert on the condition diagnostics for hull structures Ms.Tech.Sc. V.A.Goumeniuk. Three of the Division staff members (E.M.Appolonov, O.E.Litonov and V.M.Shaposhnikov) are members of the ISSC international committees.

The Division Offers:

• Comprehensive strength analysis and recommendations on the improvement of service performances
  
  
• Model and full-scale static and fatigue strength tests of ship, submersible, offshore platform and other structural details
  
  
• Utilisation of the available test facilities for testing various transport engineering products, including full-scale vehicles of various kinds
  
  
• Development of instrumentation for structural condition diagnostics
