SIXTY FIVE PERCENT INCREASE IN SIZE OF THE RUSSIAN SECTOR AT NEVA-2001 EXHIBITION SHOWS NEW CONFIDENCE IN THE DOMESTIC MARITIME & OFFSHORE ENERGY MARKETS

Realism and optimism were expressed as Russian Deputy Prime Minister Ilya Klebanov opened the 6th NEVA International Shipping Exhibition in St. Petersburg, 24-27 September. Several references were made to the accepted reality that Russia now operates an Open Market economy.

The overall size of the Exhibition had grown more than 40% with Russian exhibitors taking the lead. Over 520 exhibitors participated this year representing a 45% increase in domestic participation and a 35% increase in foreign participation.

31 countries were represented with 7 National Pavilions and Industry Groups from Germany, Norway, Finland, Denmark, Ukraine, Croatia, and the Baltic States. Some 17,500 industry professionals visited the Event (25% increase on previous attendance) while the Conference hosted 100% presentations to the audience of more than 300 delegates.

Main topics at the Conference covered future Russian Shipbuilding , replacement of the ageing Russan sea-going and inland waterway fleets, reforms in commercial banking and the rapid development of the Offshore Energy sector. Conference Papers were presented by Russian government, research institutes, shipping companies, yards and manufacturers. International speakers included Det Norske Veritas, Lloyds Register, ABB, Peter Wild (International) Ltd and Omae Research Laboratories, Japan.

The Russian Association of Commercial Sea Ports held its Annual General Meeting in conjunction with NEVA Week.

The huge participation by the Russian Maritime Market reflects a healthy domestic industry scheduled to increase its business dramatically during the next 5-7 years. The next NEVA Exhibition, 22-25 September, 2003 forms a central part of the 300th Anniversary Celebrations of the City of St. Petersburg and will be accompanied by the 1st International Maritime Forum of Russia hosted by SOROSS, the Union of Russian Shipowners.

NEVA 2003 will see significant new initiatives to display products and services for the rapid expansion of the Offshore Oil & Gaz sector and Oceanography sector, alongside further development of the well established Capital Cruise (Cruise and Ferry Shipping) and Capital Ports sectors.

NEVA 2003 will again offer the world's maritime industries the latest information and developments by direct access to the increasingly opean Russian shipping and offshore energy markets.
