"Navy and Shipbuilding Nowadays"

The conference and exhibition "Navy and Shipbuilding Nowadays" was held on February 26-29, 1996 at KSRI and was dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Navy. The conference was convened by the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute jointly with the First Naval Shipbuilding Research Institute of the Russian Federation Ministry of Defence and the "Rosvoorouzhenie" State Company.

Conference sections:

  • Section A - Designing and construction of naval and commercial ships;
    • Subsection A1 - Research design of surface naval and commercial ships,
    • Subsection A2 - Hydrodynamics,
    • Subsection A3 - Strength and reliability of marine structures,
    • Subsection A4 Physical fields.
  • Section B - Surface ship and submarine power plants. Environmental safety requirements for marine power plants;
    • Subsection B1 - Marine power plants and their components,
    • Subsection B2 - Marine nuclear power plants.
  • Section C - Marine weapons and protection equipment;
  • Section D - Ship and submarine sensor packages.

About 400 reports were presented during the Conference and published in eight-volume NSN Proceedings.

The total number of participants and honoured guests amounted to 1200. Among the Conference participants were representatives of various companies from 20 countries.

Within the framework of the Conference, some of the participating companies made presentation of their products. Altogether, more than 20 companies took part in the presentation. Their stands exhibited about 700 items.

Conference programme

The Second International Conference "Navy and Shipbuilding Nowadays" NSN'2001 was held during December 4 to 6, 2001 in St.Petersburg, Russia, at the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute and was dedicated to the forthcoming tercentenary of St.Petersburg, the birthplace of the Russian Navy and of the national shipbuilding industry.

The NSN'2001 International Conference was organised by the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute jointly with the RF MOD First Navy Research Institute, The Rosoboronexport State Company, the RF MOD State Research Institute for Rescue, Diving and Deepwater Operations, the State Marine Rescue Co-ordination Service of the RF Ministry for Transport, and the Administration of St.Petersburg.

The Conference Organising Committee was headed by I.I.Klebanov, the Vice Chairman of the Russian Federation Government. His Co-chairmen were the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Admiral V.I.Kuroedov, the Director General of the Russian Agency for Shipbuilding V.Ya.Pospelov, the Director General of the Federal Unitary Enterprise Rosoboronexport A.Yu.Belianinov and the Governor of St.Petersburg V.A.Yakovlev.

The main theme of the NSN'2001 Conference was Safety at Sea.

Conference invitations have been addressed to naval and coast guard commanding and technical officers, ship owners and operators, scientists, experts and businessmen involved in shipbuilding and related industries, research institutions, design offices and universities.

Major topics covered by the Conference included:

  • Safety provisions in naval and commercial ship design and construction.

  • Hydrodynamic characteristics of naval and commercial ships: the role in the safety of navigation.

  • Strength and reliability of marine platforms and structures: the basis of their safety.

  • Crew training for damage control in extreme situations; design, production and operation of training simulators.

  • Life-saving at sea, assistance to damaged naval and commercial ships.

  • Provisions of ecological requirements in naval and commercial ship design, construction and operation.

Conference delegates represented 12 countries from Asia, Europe and North America: France, Germany, India, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Norway, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, United Kingdom and the USA. They have come from 10 Navies, from Classification Societies, from research and design centres of shipbuilding and other related industries, universities, manufacturers, business communities and public administrations. The total number of Russian and world delegates at the NSN'2001 Conference was 240 and they represented about 70 domestic and foreign companies and organisations.

The NSN'2001 Technical Programme Committee was chaired by Academician V.M.Pashin, the Science Principal and Director of the Krylov Institute, and co-chaired by the Head of the RF MOD First Navy Research Institute Rear Admiral Professor I.G.Zakharov. The Committee has selected about 80 papers submitted by over 160 authors and co-authors. Full texts or abstracts of presentations made at the Plenary Session and at the two Working Sessions were published in Conference Proceedings available by the opening day.
