The Sixth International Conference on Development and Commercial Utilisation of Technologies in Polar Regions (POLARTECH'96) was held on September 24-26, 1996 at KSRI, St.Petersburg, Russia, under the Agreement of March 24, 1994 between the Regular Committee of the POLARTECH International Organisation of Northern Countries and the Russian Local Organising Committee. The Conference was a joint project of KSRI and POLARTECH International Organisation.

The main topic of the Conference was:   Industrial development of Northern regions (polar technologies on continent and on shelf) and related problems of territorial ecology and human safety.

    The Conference included a plenary session and five working sections:
  • Section A - Development of Arctic oil and gas fields;
  • Section B - Transport and service ships, polar navigation;
  • Section C - Problems of power supply for mining industries and construction work;
  • Section D - Fundamental and applied research in the field of cold climate technologies;
  • Section E - Environmental problems and human safety in the industrial development of polar regions.

Conference participants from 16 countries of Europe, Asia and North America have presented over 170 reports (during plenary and working sessions) which were published in POLARTECH'96 Proceedings in five volumes. About 450 scientists have attended the Conference.
