"Russian Arctic Offshore"

RAO (Russian Arctic Offshore) Conferences are held by the Russian Federation Ministry for Fuel and Energy, the Russian Federation Ministry for Natural Resources, Russian joint stock companies GAZPROM and ROSSHELF, and the Administration of St.Petersburg and hosted by the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute.

RAO Conferences are convened every two years and play a significant role in the implementation of the Russian Federation Programme for offshore oil and gas field development.

The Conference Organising Committee includes ministers, directors of enterprises and largest Russian and foreign companies involved in offshore oil and gas development.

RAO'97

The III International Conference Russian Arctic Offshore (RAO'97) was held on September 23-26, 1997 in St.Petersburg at Anichcov's Palace.

The Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute performed all basic work associated with Conference preparations; financial and organisational support was provided by the Russian Federation Ministry for Fuel and Energy, GAZPROM, ROSSHELF, Sakhalin Energy, Exxon, Brown & Root, Mobil, Norsk Hydro ASA.

An evidence of the high status of the Conference is the fact that its Organising Committee was headed by the Mr.N.G.Malyshev, the Chairman of the Board of the Russian Federation Presidential Programmes Fund, Science and Higher School Advisor to President, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

More than 1000 participant attended the RAO'97 Conference, and 125 of them were representatives of 72 foreign companies from 10 countries. Among those companies were such generally recognised leaders in offshore oil and gas development as Stateoil, Norsk Hydro, Aker (Norway), Exxon, Conoco, Mobil, Brown & Root, Anioco, Werner Offshore,Texaco (USA), BHP (Australia), Heerema (Netherlands), Kvaerner Masa-Yards (Finland), and others. The Russian Federation was represented by 125 companies and organisations.

    Conference sections:
  • Section A - Russian oil and gas projects on shelf of freezing seas;
  • Section B - Geology and Arctic offshore resources;
  • Section C - Drilling and development of oil and gas fields in freezing seas;
  • Section D - Arctic offshore hydrometeorology;
  • Section E - Offshore oil and gas development structures;
  • Section F - Floating and subsea facilities, underwater pipelines;
  • Section G - Environmental, technical and fire safety.

     Reports of the RAO'97 Conference participants were published in two volumes both in Russian and in English.

RAO'99

     The RAO'99 Conference met on July 6-9, 1999 at Shuvalov's Palace. RAO'99 was held by GAZPROM, the Russian Federation Ministry for Fuel and Energy, the Russian Federation Ministry for Natural Resources, ROSSHELF, and the Russian Academy of Sciences and hosted by the Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee was Mr.R.I.Vyakhirev, the GAZPROM Chairman of the Board.

  • Section A - Russian oil and gas projects on shelf of freezing seas
  • Section B - Geology and Arctic offshore resources
  • Section C - Arctic offshore hydrometeorology. Ecological problems
  • Section D - Offshore oil and gas development structures. Development of oil and gas fields in freezing seas
  • Section E - Floating and underwater facilities and underwater pipelines

     Conference participants presented about 250 reports published in the RAO'99 Proceedings in two volumes.

     More than 1000 participants, including 64 representatives of international companies like Total (France), Norsk Hydro, Sateoil (Norway), Kvaerner Masa-Yards (Finland), Wintershall AG (Germany), etc. have attended RAO'99. The Russian Federation was represented at RAO'99 by over 100 companies.
